June Goldstein Collection

COLLECTION COMING SOON!
June Goldstein – Artist, fashion designer and volunteer.
June was a well-loved member of the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu team. If you had been to an exhibition at the gallery in the last 20 years or so June may have been your guide.
June was born in the UK in 1927 and moved to New Zealand in 1951 with her husband. Her first career was as a nurse and midwife. Then with two children in tow she rekindled her love of the arts, which had blossomed in the galleries of London and life classes in Bristol
and studied fine arts at the University of Canterbury where she studied under some of New Zealand’s finest artists like Colin McCahon and Bill Sutton.
She became a teacher of art and history at Girl’s High, Hagley High, Linwood High and St Bede’s College but continued her own artistic endeavours too.
June understood the thread between art and fashion so well. She became adept at silk
dyeing and became a collector of beautiful fashion pieces and we are so pleased to be able to bring some of her designs, alongside pieces chosen to compliment her style, to the runway, and to the online collection.

Her love of Big Band and Jazz are the perfect compliment for the design and style of June Goldstein. In her spare time she is the lead alto saxophone in the Garden City Big Band and is in demand to play with other groups and ensembles around town.
